What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are the very concentrated liquids found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of the plant.

It can take thousands of pounds of plant material to be able to produce one single pound (or less) of essential oil. They are extremely potent. A single drop of peppermint oil has the same therapeutic value found in 28 cups of peppermint tea.

Every drop of essential oil contains hundreds of different chemical constituents that give them their beneficial properties.

Why Should I Use Essential Oils?

TO COMPLEMENT YOUR LIFE

TO BOOST YOUR ENERGY LEVELS

TO REDUCE STRESS AND ANXIETY

TO IMPROVE YOUR IMMUNITY

Maybe you already eat a squeaky clean diet, buy “green” cleaning products for your home, and take high quality vitamins every day…do you still need essential oils? The answer is a definite YES!

Essential oils don’t replace other elements of wellness in a holistic body/mind/spirit approach, but they do take them to the next level. As soon as you start using essential oils, you’ll quickly discover that they will become your favorite natural health product.

We use them in our house to stay healthy and boost our immune systems, increase our energy and stamina, improve our physical fitness, get a better night’s sleep, replace toxic chemicals in our beauty and cleaning products, uplift our moods, and more!

Why Do Essential Oils Have So Much Therapeutic Value?

Plants are carbon based, just like humans are. They naturally face a lot of the same environmental threats like we do such as predators (pests and insects in their case), viruses, fungi, bacteria, etc. When they do, the plants secrete an oily substance that can protect them from these threats. When we extract those oils, we are harnessing all of the amazing properties in a concentrated form.

Why doTERRA?

When it comes to essential oils, quality really does matter. When we began researching essential oils, we were shocked to discover that there are no regulating bodies in North America to govern the essential oil industry.

Many essential oil companies cut corners during the various stages of planting, growing, harvesting, processing, and testing with their essential oils. They may use pesticides and herbicides during growing, harvest at the wrong time of year, process oils using dangerous chemicals, and even add less pure ingredients to “extend” an oil and cut costs.

An oil labeled as pure may in fact be diluted, tainted, or low quality with minimal therapeutic value.

The doTERRA Difference

doTERRA essential oils are the highest quality essential oils you can buy. Rather than mass farming their essential oils within the United States where many of the plants are not native to, doTERRA sources their oils from their natural habitats in over 40 countries around the world.

These oils are carefully distilled or cold-pressed from plants that have been harvested at just the right time for optimal extract composition and efficacy by experienced growers.

Every essential oil goes through a series of testing using their strict CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade quality protocol. This testing begins at the site of harvesting, continues at doTERRA’s production facility, and finally goes on to an independent third party essential oil tester.

doTERRA believes in 100% transparency and has a program called Source to You that allows you to enter the batch number on your bottle of essential oil and instantly see the third party report. You can try it out here.

CPTG

When it comes to essential oils, nothing is more important than purity. Using lower quality oils means risking putting germs, heavy metals, or other contaminants onto or into your body, causing skin irritation, adverse side effects, or sickness.

Because there are no accepted standards regarding essential oil quality, doTERRA created its own testing process, calling it CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade).

The CPTG process certifies that there are no added fillers, synthetic ingredients, or harmful contaminants in their essential oils that would reduce their efficacy. This unique protocol ensures potency, purity, and consistency batch to batch.

8 Methods of Quality Testing

Organoleptic Testing

Using the human senses (sight, smell, taste, touch). This is the first line of quality testing.

Microbial Testing

Test for hazardous microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and mold. Ensures that the product has not been contaminated during the filling process.

Gas Chromatography

Separates oils into their individual components to determine which compounds are present in a test sample.

Mass Spectrometry

Uses molecular weight and charge to determine the potency.

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)

Ensures that the potency and quality of each batch of essential oils stays consistent.

Chirality Testing
Ensures no synthetic elements are present.
Isotopic Analysis
Identifies the different isotopes present in an essential oil to test for adulteration.
Heavy Metal Testing
Ensures that there are no heavy metals present in the essential oils.

Co-Impact Sourcing

Hand holding a plant to show how much doTERRA cares about co-impact sourcing

Although I love my doTERRA essential oils, my favorite aspect of this company is their desire bring hope and healing to the world. They do this through two amazing initiatives called Co-Impact Sourcing and Healing Hands.

doTERRA purposely chooses sourcing partnerships in locations where they can improve the individual, social, economic, and environmental well-being of the community. Many essential oils grow best in impoverished, developing countries and this enables doTERRA to provide jobs and resources to help families and communities escape poverty and promote economic development.

Healing Hands

Several People Holding Each Others Arms

Through the Healing Hands Foundation, doTERRA empowers individuals and communities around the world by providing micro-loans to those in extreme poverty looking to start small businesses, providing sustainable feminine hygiene kits and education to girls in developing nations, working with partners to eradicate human trafficking, and providing emergency relief when natural disasters occur.
